How Santa Cruz VPP works?
The downward force on your pedals pushes most full suspension bikes down, resulting in unwanted suspension compression. VPP bikes use a patented link configuration and axle path to apply some of the pulling force from the chain to counteract that motion caused by pedaling.

VPP is based on the patented principle of having two short links rotating in opposite directions. Who invented VPP suspension?
Rob: There were two guys that worked it out: James Klassen was the engineer that designed the linkage and Jamie Calon was the mountain biker who molded the project into a system that would operate on an off-road bicycle. Outland Technologies owned the patents.

What are the types of rear suspension?
Well, there are three basic ways to sort out a rear axle.
- Dependent. Dependent suspension – also known as a ‘live’ axle – is where the wheels are linked to each other in some fashion.
- MacPherson strut.
- Multi-link and dual wishbone.
- Torsion beam.
Each of our example bikes has a very different leverage ratio curve, as a result of the suspension design used. The smooth and predictable Horst-Link Specialized curve sits in the middle with increasing progression that levels out at 75% of the stroke for predictable suspension performance.
The DW-link uses an anti-squat suspension design to counteract forces responsible for “suspension bob ” and consequently removes the need for excessive compression damping. This allows the suspension to be much more active over low-speed impacts, allowing more traction.
“Horst Link” suspension is a type of four-bar linkage suspension. It is characterized by having both connecting links pivot on the seat tube, with the lower pivot located above the center of the bottom bracket, and the rear axle being located higher than the pivot connecting floating link and lower connecting link.
